The Exquis is a surrealist hotel. One of the basic principles of the surrealist movement is to become available at random, to remain open to the unexpected. This casualness in the creative process is what we were aiming at for the decoration of the hotel.
The presence of original collective art pieces in each room plunges us into an artistic world, where the mysterious is omnipresent. Fate will bring you to meet fantastic characters born in the imagination of eight artists.
The artworks have been created following the concept of the “Exquisite Corpse”, a board game invented in 1925 that can be played with words or images. In this last case, the first player draws a head and folds the paper so that the second player cannot see the drawing, etc. Ultimately, a strange character or creature emerges. The players do not know what was drawn before their turn, so the resulting “hybrid” body is the product of chance.
The surrealists scoured the flea markets of Saint-Ouen to hunt bargains; the objects displayed in the artworks have souls: troubled objects, incorporated objects, ghost objects, dreamlike objects, optical machines, object poems, objects with a symbolic function… following the direction of chance discovery, we went looking for furniture in the same place.
Don’t be surprised to find a sewing machine table under a red rabbit in your room…
